With the economic down turn prices of apartment rentals have come down a bit since 2008, and is now much more reasonably.

Apartments depending on whether it is in a modern or old “soviet” building could range from about $1 000 up to any price you can imagine. But the mostly for a two bedroom in a modern block you could expect to pay between $2 000 and $4 000 depending on the finishes and other things.

People tend to advertise apartments by counting all the rooms. So, if they advertise a three-room apartment, it could be one bedroom, one dining and/or lounge area and a kitchen. A three room apartment and a 3 bedroom apartment is not the same thing. So keep this in mind when looking around. There is the option of fully/ partially and unfurnished apartments. Just check everything (water and furniture) before you sign.

A tip here is that Google Chrome is an excellent tool to translate websites, which you most probably will not be able to live without here, as almost all websites are still only in Russian and Kazakh.

PS. Foreigners tend to pay more than locals, most times the price will dramatically increase when the landlord sees that you are foreign, so be prepared and try to bargain if you can.
